WAR IS PASSION - My new take on a Poem I wrote over 20 years ago.
War is Living, and Taking life away."
- I remember writing these first two lines in the back of my English textbook during secondary school history class. I couldn't tell you what inspired me. Writing poetry had never occurred to me before, but before I knew what was happening, I had written a 26-line poem about the horrors of a World War 2 battlefield.
For over 20 years I kept that poem in a drawer until I became a teacher. I read it again, and it sparked a passion in me I never thought I had: writing verse. Not having ever been taught about poetry myself, I made it my mantra to teach poetry in a fun, interactive way to every student who stepped through my door.
I couldn't agree more with 18th US President Ulysses Grant when he stated that "War never Changes". I read my poem again recently, and it dawned on me that the horrors of war I described are as present today as they were over 75 years ago. This thought inspired me to tweak my poem a little: update it, if you like, to fit the narrative of current conflicts happening around the globe at this very moment.
If you would like to read the full poem, I recently uploaded it to poetrynation.com where it has been entered into their annual competition. Here's the direct link, and if you like it, please leave me a like or comment.

I am currently working on uploading more of my poetry to this blog and Poetry Nation, so keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks for more content.
As always, thanks for spending a little of your time reading my content. I hope you enjoy what I share!
